Strategies

SIFT Strategy:

Symbols - explore the title and text for symbols

Imagery - identify sensory images and details

Figures of Speech - explore unusual word choice, order, repetition, and poetic elements

Tone and Theme - What tone does the author use? What is the message or moral? What does that reveal about the author's perspective or purpose?

 

SOAPSTone Strategy:

Speaker - who is telling the story? (voice)

Occasion - when was it written and what was happening? (context, provocation)

Audience - who is the intended audience? 

Purpose - what is the author's purpose?

Subject - what is it about?

Tone - what is the speaker's attitude toward the subject?
